National Arts Education Association Award

Congratulations George Rodrigue, who received this week from the National Arts Education Association (NAEA) their top national award for "Outstanding Service Outside of the Profession."

The award is given yearly to recognize outstanding achievement and contributions in previous years by persons or organizations outside the field of art education.

Past recipients include Jackie Kennedy, Nelson Rockefeller, Hubert Humphrey and Alice Walton.

Presented during NAEA's annual convention held this year in New York City, the award focuses on Rodrigue's efforts within the George Rodrigue Foundation of the Arts, including its annual art contest and scholarship program, art supplies for schools, free teaching aids, workshops and more.

The Story of the Blue Dog
As a boy, Rodrigue knew of a legend of the "loup-garou" or werewolf that lurked in sugar cane fields, threatening to haunt bad children. The legend said nothing about the loup-garou's color, but Rodrigue thought the night sky would cast a blue-grey shade on its fur when he painted it in 1984 for Bayou (Inkwell), a book of forty ghost stories by Chris Segura.
